How do the online EMT and Firefighter courses work?

Self Paced Internet (SPI) courses are asynchronous and include recorded lectures that students access online with no set pace for the course. Powerpoint presentations, videos and quizzes with built in assessment and remediation features are available to the students 24 hours a day. Students are also required to complete interactive online assignments, exams, scenarios, read the textbook and complete a workbook(EMT I85 course does not utilize workbook).

The pace for SPI courses are decided by the student. A person who works 60 hours a week will likely need more time to complete the course, while a retired paramedic wanting to become a volunteer EMT B may take less.

At the completion of the SPI interactive course, students will come to our facilities for hands on training. The length of time is based on the course and will range from 2 days for a First Responder, 5 days for EMT B and approximately 14 days for a Firefighter I and II NOTE: The online portion of SPI courses MUST be completed 2 weeks prior to attending your scheduled skills week/s.

After receiving the hands on instruction EMS students will return home and complete the required patient contacts with an ambulance agency, hospita or clinic in their area. When EFT receives documentation of the completed patient contacts, course completion is issued to the student which is followed by an authorization to test for NREMT certification.

Are your EMT courses approved by the NREMT?

Yes, our EMT-B and EMT-I85 courses are approved NREMT courses. If your state utilizes the NREMT as bases for EMT licensure or certification then passing our course and the NREMT exams will allow you to apply for reciprocity in your state.

What are the organizational and student benefits of EMT & Fire Training Inc. LVI and SPI courses?

Cost Reduction
Less travel expenses, material costs and classroom overhead because much of the course is held online.

Increased Productivity
SPI courses do not have the constraints of geography and time that so often dictate the structure and layout of EMS and Firefighter training. Ambulance Services and Fire Departments can now train personnel during slow periods rather than scheduling a course outside of work hours. Students can progress through the interactive material at any pace with the ability to start, stop and review lessons and activities as often as they wish.

Course Consistency
Our SPI courses allow for the standardized delivery of training material with a compressed delivery time. This eliminates session to session variances that occur in traditional classroom settings with even the best instructors.

Access from Anywhere
LVI and SPI courses can be accessed from any computer with an internet connection. SPI courses can be utilized at any time as students do not have to align their time to a training schedule. LVI courses, though live online, are also recorded which makes entire lessons available to students unable to attend an occasional live session.

Course Effectiveness
LVI and SPI courses both utilize a multimedia based instructional design that is robust, engaging and repeatable. Students participate in course activities with instant feedback in a learning environment that insists on comprehension of material prior to moving on to more difficult subject matter.

Privacy
Students can move through the course material with privacy and without scrutiny. Peer stress can be a hinderance to the learning process and SPI and LVI courses eliminate this influence. Students learn from mistakes and gain knowledge without the fear of failure.

Do EMT & Fire Training Inc. EMT courses follow the EMT: National Standards Curriculum (NSC)?

The National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA) has released the National EMS Education Standards that replace the National Standards Curriculum (NSC). The NREMT and likely your state are in the process of transitioning away from the NSC.

The NSC was specific with regard to the order, timing, delivery and assessment of practical skills, however the amount of time for each lesson, including skills, was only a "recommendation". The NSC further states that the format of the curricula model may be altered.

The new EMS Education Standards are without these course design constraints and look toward final EMT competency rather than the specific path the student used to achieve that competency. Our programs currently utilizes the content and scope of practice of the NSC, but follows the less prescriptive format of the National EMS Education Standards. Our course allows for diverse implementation methods to meet local needs and evolving educational practices as recommended in the new EMS Educational Standards.

EFT Instructors continually monitor automatically generated student progress and activity reports. These reports show not only grades, but details of participation and activity in all lessons. If an instructor sees a deficiency in a student's performance or participation the student will be contacted and provided with additional instruction or remediation if necessary. Each student is required to have a progress conference in our virtual office with an EFT instructor after the completion of each module.
(Top of Page)

Telepathy.... no just kidding. Students may access instructors via the EFT helpdesk, an online support application or by scheduling a meeting in the EFT virtual office online where lesson material may reviewed with an instructor in a live, real time environment. Telephone may also be used at the instructors discretion. During practical skills training students will be communicating with instructors one-on-one.
(Top of Page)

Students are required to complete a module evaluation lesson at the completion of each course module.(see evaluation forms at bottom of page). Evaluation data is gathered electronically in a secure environment and then compiled. All evaluations are anonymous and students are encouraged to be honest with their answers not having to fear retaliation.
(Top of Page)

Compiled evaluation data is submitted to the advisory committee who then make recommendations to be carried out by the board of directors. The advisory committee also gives instructors direct feedback based on the evaluations.

Students will demonstrate attainment of knowledge, attitude and skills by passing skill assessments and evaluations along with exams and quizzes that are presented throughout the course. These same tools will be utilized to assure proficiency, or advancement of knowledge as each module is completed, however skill competency will not be achieved until the students have completed their hands on training in person at our facilities on Hayden Lake, Idaho.

During hands on training students will face intensive instruction and evaluation. EFT will NOT provide course completion for any student who does not demonstrate competency in all required skills.
(Top of Page)

EFT uses an open source application called Moodle. This application is used by many major universities and colleges in the delivery of online educational programs.
(Top of Page)

EFT has an advisory committee composed of our program director, course physicians, instructors, past students and local EMS providers. This committee meets once every 3 months and reviews all course and instructor evaluations. Any recommendations to increase course effectiveness are made to the EFT board of directors. The board of directors then has those tasks carried out and reports back to the advisory committee when complete.
(Top of Page)

Students are introduced to the psychomotor skills in online discussions, lectures, videos, and interactive lessons that will give the students a solid understanding of the skill fundamentals. Students will then attend our intensive practical skills sessions in person which will move them from understanding skill concepts to kinesthetic application in a simulated real world, and simulated test environment.
(Top of Page)

Students will be immersed in an intense training environment that will culminate in complete moulaged and mocked up training scenarios. Students will be trained and assessed by multiple instructors which will give them a broader range of understanding. EFT maintains a 1:4 or better instructor to student ratio for this intensive practical week. Remediation for students who are struggling with a certain skill will be provided with one on one instruction and coaching until the student reaches competency.
(Top of Page)

EFT courses are designed to follow the established guidelines published by the State of Idaho, IFSAC, and the NTHSA. Completion of our courses allow students to take NREMT or IFSAC tests to become nationally certified. If a state requires training not covered in these curriculums, EFT will be glad to provide additional modules that will meet individual state requirements.
