New York EMT Course Acceptance and Certification

Q. Can I become a certified and licensed EMT in New York if I pass the EMT & Fire Training EMT B Course?

A. The state of New York requires EMS applicants who are applying for reciprocity to have a license in another state, and have a need for a New York State certification. If you take our course you will have an NREMT Certification but you will not be licensed in a specific state. This means that upon completing our course, you would have to obtain licensure or certification in another state before you could apply for reciprocity with the state of New York.

Frequently Asked Questions: http://www.health.state.ny.us/nysdoh/ems/certification/certification.htm

Q. Where is the state of New York in the transition from the National Standard Curriculum to the new National EMS Education Standards?

A. New York keeps their training current with the US Department of Transportation minimum standard curriculum and expects all applicants to be trained with these standards as a minimum in order to apply for licensure or certification in their state.

Q. Does New York require any extra EMT training that EFT does not provide in its course?

A. No.

Q. How do I recertify for EMS in the State of New York?

A. To recertify as an EMT-Basic in New York you must have a 24-hour refresher course, current CPR certification and a Skill Competency Verification.

We offer an online refresher that is 24 hours, and includes 10 hours of self-directed learning, and 14 hours of Virtual Instructor Led Training (VILT) sessions where a real instructor is present to answer questions and discuss the topics. It is fully accepted by the NREMT and is CECBEMS accredited. This is only one of the few online refreshers that meet the actual requirements by the NREMT to be counted as an official refresher. You have 2 years to complete the refresher from the time you sign up (or you can usually get it done in as little as 2 to 3 weeks). The cost of the refresher is $249.
